LCC is an initiative by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) under the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) to help shift our cities towards a low-carbon future.
In achieving this, the Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF) established in 2011, aims to provide Local Authorities, universities and all states nationwide to transform their cities into low carbon cities. The LCCF looks at addressing carbon emissions in 4 main areas: Urban Environment, Urban Infrastructure, Urban Transportation and Buildings.
It provides the necessary tools – including city design guidelines, measurement and reporting methodology as well as an assessment and recognition programme – to implement low-carbon strategies in a systematic and impactful manner.
Since then, MGTC has been working alongside local authorities to establish Low Carbon Zones in State Capitals and major urban areas across the country. Such zones will have reduced emissions from energy and water consumption of buildings and common areas, reduced emissions from petrol and diesel private vehicles used and reduced emissions from the generation of waste that end up in landfills.
